By Rehanna RamsayThere is always a story within a story, and in the case of new attorney, Phillip Damien Da Silva that idiom certainly proves true.Da silva, the son of prominent ophthalmologist and businessman, Dr. Philip Da Silva Sr. and Mrs. Barbara Da Silva, was admitted to the bar on Friday, Cheap Jerseys From China, before Justice Brassington Reynolds and a gathering of delighted family and friends. While being accepted to the bar to practice law is no simple feat, what is remarkable about this new attorney is the fact that he faced a fierce battle with a life threatening disease while pursuing his lifelong dream and prevailed.Speaking exclusively with this newspaper about his journey to the legal fraternity, Da Silva, who spent his elementary years at Mae’s under 12 school and later completed his secondary schooling at Queen’s College, revealed that he had actually started out on the career path of a physician. The new lawyer explained that he had begun his premedical studies at University of Guyana, before switching to law.“As I was doing medicine I actually took a few courses in law and found it quite interesting, ” he recalled.   It was that interest; the attorney said, that resulted in his change of career paths.Hence, he pursued and completed his Bachelor of Laws Degree, (LLB) at UG; before embarking on his studies at the Hugh Wooding Law School (HWLS) St. Augustine Campus, Trinidad and Tobago.Da Silva said that his studies at HWLS were going quite well until he started to experience some strange symptoms. He recalled that he paid several visits to the doctor’s office in Trinidad but it was not until he returned home to Guyana that he was diagnosed with cancer.Flanked by family and friends from left to right: Dr Shannon Da Silva, Mrs Barbara Da Silva, Attorney–at-Law, Ronald Burchsmith, Justice Brassington Reynolds, Attorney-at-law Phillip Damien Da Silva, Naketa Da Silva, and Dr Phillip Da Silva.Attorney–at-law, Phillip Da SilvaThe attorney said that the doctors told him that a tumor was located in his nasal cavity. The news was obviously shocking to Da Silva and his close family circle.  But he said that he leaned towards his faith and family for support during the difficult time.Looking back, the young lawyer emphasised that it was his faith and family that keep him going; elements he believes are essential to survival of anyone facing similar challenges. He said that he had to try his utmost to stay positive and to focus on the things that were going well in his life.Given his diagnosis, Da Silva had to defer his studies to accommodate chemotherapy and radiology treatment. After a while undergoing the treatment, the then aspiring lawyer became cancer free.He therefore returned to HWLS and completed his Legal Certificate Education.During, his acceptance speech on Friday, the lawyer recounted his experience.“I am humbled and privileged to stand before the court as the newest member of the legal fraternity. I have experienced much to arrive in the space I am blessed to occupy today.”“I must admit that along the way, I questioned whether this dream would become a reality, particularly when the dream became a nightmare when I was diagnosed with cancer while attending Law School.“I was able to successfully complete both my legal studies and cancer treatment as evidenced by my presence here today.”“Through my experiences, both personal and academic, I have learnt that God will always push me forward, teach me, and remind me of what I already know.”The young attorney particularly thanked his father, Philip DaSilva and mother, Barbara DaSilva for their unconditional love and support.“For all that you have given me; it is time to start giving back to you. The best start is to say thank you.”He also expressed gratitude to his sisters, Natalie, Shannon and his wife, Naketa, for their undying love and support.Da Silva also thanked Attorney-at-Law Ronald Burch-Smith for presenting his petition to the Court.Justice Reynolds admonished the young attorney to continue studying to achieve higher heights in the field.“Don’t take the short cuts….Your family name Da Silva is a household name after serving the Guyanese public with excellence for a number of years, ” Justice Reynolds remarked.

“NYPD funded the funeral”- Randolph Holder Snr. The mourning period is not over for the Holder family in the United States as well as the Lovell family in Guyana following the shooting death of Guyana born NYPD rank, Randolph Holder Jnr.  In fact, days after the interment of his body in Guyana, the wound remains fresh for those whom the late NYPD, Detective touched.“He is at peace and he would have been happy as we are, amidst our grief, at the way Guyana turned out as did the many members of the NYPD who traveled all the way to Guyana to see him off, ” said Bonita Montague, one of the organizers of the funeral in Guyana.Herself, a migrant who once served in the Guyana Police Force, she said “We are even more happy to be wearing the Guyana flag anywhere in the world following the support and outpouring of Guyana for the funeral that proves to the world that no matter where we go, we are a united Guyanese people.”These were the echoed sentiments of the relatives of the slain NYPD officer yesterday at a news conference held at the Guyana Marriott. They expressed gratitude to all of Guyana, including President David Granger, Minister of Public Security Khemraj Ramjattan and Mayor Hamilton Green.Members of the Holder family and supporters including his Grandmother Elizabeth Holder at center. In the presence of other persons, Randolph Holder Snr. made it clear that Elizabeth Griffith, the grandmother with whom Holder was entrusted after her daughter passed “will be taken care of.”Holder snr. as well as the late cop’s brothers Kellon and Prince expressed gratitude, especially to Social Activist Mark Benschop for his unwavering organizing and logistical support towards making sure the send off was as grand as it was. When quizzed about who is footing the bill for the local funeral, the family was high in its praise to the Guyana Government for the support but made it clear that no direct financial assistance was offered to family members by the government.“The NYPD financed it… as far as we are aware, to date, the NYPD financed the funeral in its entirety… there has not been any need for any financial input from the Guyana Government. Words cannot express how grateful we are to all of Guyana, including Fly Jamaica, the government, the Guyana Police Force, Commander Hicken and the Police Commissioner Mr. Seelall Persaud for the support given to us.”While he has lost his son in the line of duty as an NYPD officer, Holder snr., whose father was also a police officer in Guyana, said that he has no qualms about encouraging youths to pursue a career in the armed Forces. “It is not only rewarding but it also provides discipline and as is the case with any job there are risk factors. My son’s death was unfortunate but I have no regret about him choosing the path that he took.”Also speaking to the media was Holder’s grandmother Elizabeth Lovell, Cheap Jerseys From China, who recalled her times playing the role of mother and grandmother.Lovell said that her grandson’s demise was a great misfortune to her and his Guyana-based brother but she can never forget the times shared and the sacrifices made.Days after a funeral service in New York, the body of the obviously respected policeman was flown to Guyana for a second funeral service and the interment at Georgetown’s Le Repentir cemetery. All told, some eighty NYPD ranks attended the funeral including 30 serving Guyana-born ranks. Attorney-at- Law, Abraham Dabdoub, of Jamaica has been retained on behalf of PPP/C member, Ganga Persaud, who is seeking to legally challenge the outcome of the recently held Regional and General Elections.Attorney- at –law Abraham DabdoubAn elections petition was filed on behalf of Persaud, on June 23, last. According to the document, Persaud and members of the former government are questioning the validity of the May 11, 2015 polls which declared the APNU AFC Government winners.Persaud named the Chief Elections Officer, Keith Lowenfield, and leaders of the eight political parties, which contested the last elections as respondents, in the matter.  Lowenfield through his Attorney, Roysdale Forde had subsequently filed a summons to strike out the petition.Forde had contended that sufficient material facts have not been provided in the petition challenging the recently concluded elections. The Attorney held that the petition is frivolous and vexatious. He requested that the elections petition be struck out on the grounds that sections of the petition failed to disclose reasonable cause of action.Dabdoub, who was admitted to practice in Guyana, yesterday made an appearance on behalf of the petitioner (Persaud).   During the in chamber proceeding before Chief Justice (Ag) Ian Chang, the Attorney presented arguments in response to the claims outlined by Forde.Persaud is also being represented by Attorney-at-Law, Anil Nandlall, who had explained that the court is in the process of hearing the interlocutory applications (summons) before proceeding into the substantive matters of the petition.Three summonses have been filed in relation to the elections. Among them is a request by Nandlall for a court order directing the Chief Elections Officer to produce the parcels of all elections papers and documents, including those he received from the Returning Officer of each electoral division under section 102 of the Representation of the People Act for inspection and examination for the purpose of the Elections Petition. These would include all the electoral lists containing the names of the persons entitled to vote, all issued ballots, all unused ballots, all votes cast by electors, all Statements of Poll issued at specified polling divisions; all certificates of counting issued in respect to the votes cast at each and every polling division, and all polling books used at each and every polling station. The matter is slated for continuation on October 6.In the petition, the applicant (Persaud), who was appointed Elections Agent of the List of Candidates for the PPP/C, claimed that the elections were “unlawfully conducted” and the result of the elections was affected or might have been affected by unlawful acts or omissions. He underscored that the elections were not held in conformity with the Constitution of Guyana and the Representation of the Peoples’ Act, Chapter 1:03.As such, the opposition essentially requested a recount of all ballot boxes for the last elections and fresh elections were also called for. The PPP/C had claimed that the entire electoral process was flawed; that it contained many procedural errors and instances of fraudulent and/or suspicious actions.“Unrest, fake Statements of Poll (SOPs) and multiple voting were among several causes cited when the PPP/C filed its elections petition.”The presence of “huge mobs” at several polling stations and other strategic places, Cheap Jerseys From China Online, particularly in Region Four, were also cited by the party as another cause for intimidation and fear which in turn “rendered it impossible for polling, counting agents and duly appointed candidates to carry out their duties and functions properly.
