During her medical outreaches in supporting Guyana’s efforts to make health care and social services accessible to all Guyanese, Medical Lecturer, Dr. Joan Liverpool, has been able to zero in on key social and health issues where much improvement is needed.Family and Medical Education Specialist, Dr. Joan LiverpoolThe Guyanese born doctor, now residing in Georgia U.S.A, Cheap NFL Jerseys China, has been paying regular visits to Guyana for the past 12 years after being solicited by former Health Minister, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, to assist in the rebuilding and restructuring of the nation’s health care system. As part of her yearly visits, Liverpool, who specialises in Family Medicine and Medical Education, along with a team of medical practitioners representing the Deskan Institute and Training Medical Mission, have been reaching out to citizens of deprived communities to offer their services free of cost.It is by means of their regular visits and interactions with the Ministries of Health and Education, Social Services organisations and the University of Guyana, an assessment was made, which identified diabetes and suicide as being Guyana’s major health and social concerns.According to Medical Associate, Vivette Jones, Clinical Nurse Specialist and Certified Diabetes Educator, of an estimated 400 patients seen each day, one third is affected by the disease, while another one third has not been diagnosed.“Just having diabetes, if you haven’t been diagnosed, it’s as if you have already had a heart attack, ” the Diabetes Educator asserted. She added that the disease is such a concern, since it lends itself to so many other diseases and illnesses, including blindness, loss of limbs and kidney problems. While these complications are deadly, according to Jones, they are preventable with education and proper care, which she stated is the primary aim of the Deskan Institute.Concern was also raised about Guyana’s rising suicide rate. Dr. Liverpool noted that with Guyana carrying the highest suicide rate in the Caribbean, much can be said of the easy accessibility to poison that Guyanese market places provide. “It is troubling how easily poison can get into the hands of the most vulnerable, ” she said.Clinical Nurse Specialist/ Certified Diabetes Educator, Vivette JonesHaving rendered their services to various Regions in Guyana, the Deskan Institute has made known its commitment to continue their outreach programmes, not only to address health issues but to include management of social issues on their agenda.

By Fareeza HaniffThe Embassy of the United States of America yesterday hosted a discussion for members of the media at the National Library on the upcoming elections to be held in that country in November.Chairing the discussion was former National Chairman of the Democratic Party, Mr. Donald Fowler.According to Fowler, many Americans have a negative attitude towards the Republicans and President George Bush mainly because of economic issues and the war in Iraq.He said that it is commonly suggested that the Democrats will win the elections, but according to Fowler, the polls are close between Senator John McCain and Senator Barrack Obama. Most people expect Obama to be the next President of the United States of America, but he however added that Senator McCain can easily ‘overtake’ Obama.Mr. Fowler, who served as National Chairman of the Democratic Party for two years, explained that the two candidates are very different individuals. In this regard, he noted that if Senator McCain is elected, then he will be the oldest President in the United States of America; and if Senator Obama is elected then he will be the first African American President in the history of America.According to Fowler, there is major contrast between the two candidates. McCain is far more experienced than Obama, he said.He noted that there is no predictability of elections in the United States, as a lot of Americans do not make up their minds in advance as to who they want to vote for. Some people, he said, wait until the last moment to decide whom they want to be the next President of the US, and it is something like this that can change the entire makeup of the elections, Fowler said.According to the American politician, Joe Morgan Reds Jersey, both Senators are more understanding and accommodating when it comes to the relationship that America has with other countries, including Guyana. He noted that both men fully understand that they are living in a truly global economy. When it comes to the relationship between the United States and Cuba, Fowler believes that McCain and Obama can significantly improve the association that the US shares with that country. As it relates to the media’s coverage of the election campaign in the US, he said that he has observed that the media seems to favour Obama more than McCain. Although the media favours Obama, Fowler noted that it has not increased Obama’s standards in the poll.As it regards immigrants in the country and how Obama would deal with the situation, Fowler noted that the Senator would try and adopt President Bush’s policy of giving the immigrants an opportunity to document themselves.Currently there are 12 million immigrants in the United States of America, and of that number five per cent constitutes the total population of America.Mr. Donald Fowler is also a political science professor and has spent most of his adult life in various Democratic Party roles, including as Executive Director and Chairman of the South Carolina Democratic Party. His term as National Chairman encompassed the 1996 presidential election between Bill Clinton and Bob Dole. The general election in the United States is slated to take place on November 4, this year.
