– Top Cop For another year in succession the Tactical Services Unit copped the top prize at the annual police anniversary route march yesterday, to mark the force’s 170th anniversary.They turned back the challenge of the Felix Austin Police College (Georgetown) and the Presidential Guard who tied for second position in an early morning spectacle through the streets of Georgetown.Led by Assistant Commissioner, George Vyphuis, close to 500 ranks and officers, along with several civilian partners first gave salute to Minister of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee in front of his office on Brickdam, and then to Police Commissioner Henry Greene at Eve Leary.The Police Wives Association was one of the most impressive civilian units on parade.Commissioner Greene described the parade, which had the largest turnout in many years, as very impressive. He noted that it was a gallant show of fitness and co-ordination.In an address after the parade, the Commissioner reminded the participants of the Disciplined Services Report which had recommended that the police force retain aspects of drill and musketry.And given the display yesterday, it was evident that the recommendation has not been lost on the Guyana Police Force.So impressed was the Commissioner that he announced several on the spot monetary rewards.The most significant was $50, 000 to the oldest participant, Florizel Fraser, who was part of the Police Wives Association contingent.The Immigration Department contingent was also the recipient of the Commissioner’s Special award of $100, 000 for its performance during the parade. It also earned the Best Female Unit on parade prize.“I’m always hearing the talk that the Immigration Department is not police but if you see them march it’s unbelievable, ” the Commissioner said.He also presented a monetary award to the newly formed Police Scouts Movement, who were participating for the first time.In addition to the Commissioner’s awards, several trophies and cash incentives were presented to the top units on parade.In the civilian category, Cheap Jerseys, the Police Wives Association copped the top prize, beating out the Community Policing Groups.After years of ‘knocking on the door’ the Criminal Investigations Department finally copped the first prize in the plainclothes unit category.Yesterday’s parade was postponed to facilitate the police activity during the recently held CARICOM Heads of government meeting earlier this month.

Air Services Limited Flight Training School (ASLFTS) is gearing to introduce two new programmes that are aimed at having adequately trained personnel on the ground, monitoring flights.Captain Kinch teaching studentsA company official said that the school is expanding its programmes beyond the traditional flight training.“There are other aspects to operation to get a flight out safely…You also need ground agents such as your flight dispatchers and also flight watchers, where as the flights go out there is someone there to monitor the flights, ” he said.The official enlightened that during this year, ASLFTS is looking to enhance training and develop programmes to supplement these areas such as the dispatching process and the flight watch process.These programmes are being developed by the skillful personnel of ASLFTS with guidelines from the International Civil Aviation Organization and the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA). After completion, the courses would be submitted to the GCAA for scrutiny and approval.He noted, “While we have all these plans, we still have to engage the authorities to make sure the programme meets the required standards…We are looking to have those programmes submitted in the coming months.”The school is currently involved in training ambitious persons desirous of joining an elite group of pilots. Aspiring pilots are taught the basics to survive in any organization which recruits them for their skills.ASLFTS began operations in 2003 to supply Air Services Limited with a cadre of professionally trained pilots to crew its ever expanding fleet. The school is fully approved by the GCAA. In March 2013 GCAA awarded the school for its invaluable contribution to the development of aviation in Guyana.The school offers the Private Pilot Licence, Instrument Rating and Commercial Pilot Licence, which are done in stages. All training is done at the Ogle International Airport, where the school is located; 15 minutes from Georgetown.On January 13, a batch of seven students commenced the initial phase of their Private Pilot Licence training, Ground School or theory. Duration of this phase is about two months and is done in a state-of-the-art classroom, NFL Jerseys China, fully equipped with all modern training aids. The students are being taught by Captain Antonio Kinch.Kinch, a Barbadian, teaches both ground school for the Private Pilot Licence as well as Private Pilot flight and Commercial Pilot flight training. He was trained in the United States of America in California and Florida.Kinch said he chose to work at ASL because it is a stable and sound company. “They have three departments: Maintenance, Commercial Sector and the Flight School, so I think that it was a very wise to choose this company as a career path. Lucille Abrams is now in a stable condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC). She was the victim of last Friday’s horrific fatal accident at Enmore, East Coast Demerara. She sustained serious injuries about her body.When Kaieteur News visited the patient yesterday at the Female Surgical Ward, Abrams was being attended to by her children, who were at her bedside trying to feed her “light food items”.She told this newspaper that she hails from Lot 123 Enmore North, ECD, and on the day of the incident she was awaiting transportation to head into Georgetown.“I was waiting on the left side to go to Victoria village, where buses turn around, and the vehicle (police vehicle) hit me first. I don’t know anything else after that”This newspaper understands that the young woman suffered injuries to her head, and her neck which is now in a brace. She also sustained numerous cuts and scrapes on her right hand, jerseys from china, burns and scrapes on her left leg and internal pain at locations such as her stomach and chest.Breathing is painful and though her neck is not fractured the doctors will need to conduct more tests to verify the severity of damage along the rest of her body.Further reports are that the driver of the police vehicle, 21-year-old Mark Jones who is currently in the Male Accident Ward, also sustained injuries about his head, which includes a badly bruised face, neck injuries and a broken nose.Kaieteur News also understands that Jones’s mother has been visiting Abrams on numerous occasions at the GPHC.Yesterday the young man’s mother visited the injured woman in the company of another young woman and the former headmistress of Queen’s College, Freidel Isaacs.
